NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – A beautiful Live Oak dubbed “The Million Dollar Tree” is named North Myrtle Beach’s Tree of the Month for July 2022.
Gene and Dianne Marshall bought a home in North Myrtle Beach back in June 2010. The couple was visiting from Winston Salem, NC, when they saw the home and the unique Live Oak in the front yard. The tree caught their attention, and soon, their hearts.
Live Oaks (Quercus virginiana) are a popular choice along the Carolina coast due to their hardiness and low maintenance needs once established. Although they grow relatively slow, they are extremely resilient and have a long lifespan.
Why is this Live Oak called, “The Million Dollar Tree?”
The Marshall’s say it’s because their neighbors say the tree adds that value to their home. In fact, the Marshall’s sacrificed a circular driveway to preserve the tree, because they agree, it adds value, but it also provides beauty, a home for songbirds, shade, and curbside appeal.
Visitors have suggested Gene and Dianne add a swing, but they’ve turned down those suggestions because they don’t want to cause the tree any damage or harm.
The North Myrtle Beach Tree Board chose this Live Oak because of the Marshall’s commitment to its health and preservation, as well as its appearance.
