HURRICANE IDALIA – AUGUST 29 UPDATE
The City of North Myrtle Beach is now under a Tropical Storm Watch, meaning tropical storm conditions are possible within 48 hours.
The current forecast suggests that North Myrtle Beach will begin to feel impacts from Hurricane Idalia late in the day on Wednesday through Thursday morning.
POTENTIAL IMPACTS FROM HURRICANE IDALIA FOR OUR AREA INCLUDE:
- Rainfall amounts expected to average 4 to 6 inches
- Storm surge inundation of 1 to 3 feet above ground level
- We are at risk for fast developing tornadoes
- Tropical storm force winds are expected to begin Wednesday night
- Sustained winds of 30 to 40 MPH are possible
- Wind gusts could range from 40 to 50 MPH
PLEASE NOTE:
KING TIDES: King Tides will impact the City of North Myrtle Beach starting tonight through Friday, September 1st. These high tides can cause flooding in low-lying areas of the city and can also cause beach erosion. Homeowners in low-lying areas that flood, particularly Cherry Grove, should secure outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and other belongings, and move cars to higher ground. SWIMMING: Rough surf and rip currents are a significant hazard during storms and beach visitors are advised to avoid swimming in the ocean until conditions improve.
SANITATION SERVICES: Sanitation services are being provided according to the regular schedule. If there is any change to that schedule, we will announce it.
EMERGENCY INFORMATION: City officials will post updates on weather conditions, closures, and anything related to the storm via press release, website updates, and City social media sites.
