NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., August 24, 2023 – The City of North Myrtle Beach has announced plans to repair and reopen the pedestrian walkway on the Barefoot Bridge, which was closed in June due to safety concerns from deterioration of the concrete.
While the bridge remains open to vehicular traffic, the pedestrian walkway will stay closed until repairs can be made. The City has hired an engineering firm to assess the damage and design repairs.
The repairs are tentatively scheduled for January or February 2024, during the bridge's annual winter maintenance. As in previous years, the maintenance work will reduce traffic to one lane and require temporary signals to guide motorists.
The City understands the closure of the pedestrian walkway causes inconvenience and disruption for residents. We appreciate your patience as we work to restore and reopen the walkway as quickly as possible.
Additional updates will be provided as details are finalized on the repair timeline and pedestrian access. The community's cooperation during this infrastructure improvement project is greatly appreciated.
