Misinformation Regarding Obstructions on the Beach

City Seal - 360 x 480

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – According to the current, North Myrtle Beach ordinance, people are not allowed to leave items on the beach between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. This ordinance has been in existence since 2007. Click here to see the current ordinance.

This does not mean that families are prohibited from using chairs, umbrellas, and other beach wares after 7 p.m. What it does mean is that anyone placing those items on the beach after 7 p.m. must personally maintain them and remove them whenever they leave the beach.

The ordinance was originally passed with four factors in mind:

  1. The safety of the public during non-daylight hours (i.e., preventing anyone from tripping over an obstruction and sustaining an injury)
  2. Maintaining a safe environment for nesting sea turtles and their offspring
  3. Keeping human-caused debris out of the ocean
  4. Allowing enough time for city staff to rake and groom the beaches (i.e., 9 miles of shoreline)
