NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The City of North Myrtle Beach Fire Department is one of only 104 fire departments across the state to earn the coveted Fire Safe South Carolina designation. The award goes to fire departments that develop community risk reduction plans.

Fire Safe South Carolina has worked with departments on community risk reduction plans for the past five years. This is the second year the North Myrtle Beach Fire Department earned the honor.

NMB Fire Chief Garry Spain said, “We are proud to be one of only 104 Fire Departments across the State to receive South Carolina’s Fire Safe designation.”

Josh Fulbright, Chief of Community Risk Reduction with Fire Safe SC, says the group works with firefighters across the state to identify the root causes of fatal fires. The goal is to prevent them from happening.

Cooking is the number one cause of fires overall, followed by heating and electrical fires. Fulbright says smoking, however, is the number one cause of fatal fires in South Carolina.

The Fire Safe SC award will be presented to the North Myrtle Beach Fire Department during the Firefighter Associations’ Fire-Rescue Conference on Saturday, June 11 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
